    Rate of Pay: $142.93 per day 

    Position Status: Seasonal Contract, Full time 

    Term: June 15th to August 23rd OR August 30th, 2025 

    Reports To: Assistant Manager of Programs 

    Nature & Scope

    YMCA Camp Elphinstone is seeking individuals to fill the role of Leadership Development Head Counsellor 

    The LD Head Counsellor support the training of the Leadership Development Counsellor team. As well the LD Head Counsellor will support the LD Counsellors through the summer, being their first point of contact for any questions, concerns, or support needed with the program or the campers.  Part of this training will include supporting training of backpacking/canoe trips in June. The LD Head Counsellor will provide assistance and leadership to other staff pertaining to outdoor living skills and practices.  

    The LD Head Counsellor will support the LD counsellors in ensuring an impactful, intentional and growth focused leadership program is provided. The leadership program includes multi-day paddling and/or backpacking trips and the LD Head Counsellor will also be responsible for working with the Out-tripping team to prepare the out-trips. The LD Head Counsellor must be prepared to jump in to a group should they need to cover a LD Counsellor for any reason.  

    The LD Head Counsellor is a member of the of the Leadership Development team. The Leadership Development program is designed to support youth through learning valuable leadership skills that are transferable to a broad spectrum of life of work situations. Leadership Development staff are integral to the success of the program and are expected to uphold a high level of professionalism. 

    Responsibilities 

    • Provide support and guidance to the LD Counsellor team
    • Deliver prepared, innovative training that supports professional development of staff & volunteers. 
    • Ensure the Leadership Development program meets the standards and expectations and the LD counsellors are providing and impactful, intentional, and growth focused leadership program.
    • Act as a point of contact and program lead for leadership participants and families.
    • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff.
    • Support LD counsellors in managing group dynamics and behaviours of the cabin to ensure the emotional and physical safety of all campers
    • Prioritize the experience of all Leadership Development participants and ensure program outcomes are being met
    • Support multi-day canoe or backpacking trips

    Qualifications

    • Age 19+ by start of contract
    • Standard First Aid And CPR-C
    • Criminal Reference Check with a Vulnerable Sector Screening issued no later than six (6) months preceding start date 
    • Previous camp experience working with youth
    • 2 successful reference checks

    Additional Qualifications (assets)

    • Lifesaving Instructor 
    • Class 4 Driver’s License (or willing to obtain) and experience driving trailers
    • NL Pool or Waterfront
    • National Lifeguard Instructor
