Base Manager- Jack Pine Paddle- YELLOWKNIFE

    RESPONSIBILILTIES:

    • Coordinate and manage paddling products (shuttles, paddling courses, canoe and kayak rentals, youth paddling camps, and canoe and kayak expedition tours). Duties here include support for instructors and guides in preparation for courses, camps and expedition tours, to stepping up directly as an instructor and guide as needed. Expedition tours may be in the Yellowknife area, Mackenzie Mountains, Great Slave Lake (East & North Arms), or the Thelon River watershed.
    • Prepare and pack dry food for youth paddling camps and canoe and kayak tours. Assist guides purchase and package fresh food prior to tours. Assist in adapting menus for dietary preferences/allergies in the preparation and packing.
    • Manage equipment including cleaning, inspecting, repairing, outfitting and organizing outdoor gear and creating an inventory. Also ordering gear and working with suppliers for warranty, replacement issues. Ensuring satellite bases are properly stocked with equipment in Fort Smith, Inuvik and Norman Wells.
    • Planning, marketing and operating local half-day canoe tours in Yellowknife Bay.
    • Monitoring and managing the email account and providing front-line support to clients (individual and organizations), administrative support for paddling products, and liaising between Jackpine Paddle and indigenous organizations and gov’t contacts.
    • Liaising with NWT Parks staff
    • Providing on-call emergency management coordination between field staff and emergency/medical services for youth paddling camps and canoe and kayak expedition tours.
    • Retailing swag at local festivals

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Diligent and detail-orientated.
    • Able to learn quickly and work independently.
    • Ability to collaborate well with instructors and guides.
    • Flexible work hours, work in the evenings and weekends will be required.
    • Must love working outdoors for long days on the water taking care of others even if rainy, buggy, windy and cold.
    • Lives in Yellowknife or willingly to move for Yellowknife for the summer.
    • Mentor our apprentice who will assist you in this role.

    PREFERRED SKILLS/CERTIFICATIONS:

    Below are the skills/certifications an ideal candidate would possess. You do not have to check every single box in order to apply for this position!

    • Current certification in Wilderness First Aid
    • Must submit a criminal records check (vulnerable persons)
    • Class 4 driver’s licence (ability to drive passenger vans)
    • Experience loading and strapping canoes and kayaks to trailers and vehicles, and driving (backing up canoe/kayak trailers).
    • Current non-restricted firearms certification
    • Paddle Canada (or equivalent) lake/whitewater canoe skill/instructor certification or sea kayak skill/instructor certification
    • Lives in the Northwest Territories with experience back-country camping or canoeing and kayaking in the NWT and Yellowknife area.
    • Has resided in the NWT for many years or plans to make the NWT home.
    • Experience in a canoe or kayak summer camp, or as an outdoor wilderness guide or instructor
    • Current whitewater rescue certification and experience
    • Confident whitewater canoe paddler
    • Experience outfitting and repairing canoes and kayaks

    PAY/TERM:

    • May 6 – August 31, 2019. Possible extension to Sept 30, 2019. Flexible start/end date for the right candidate.
    • $1,000.00 a week, salary. 40 hrs per week. 17 weeks with 4 weeks possible extension.
    • Overtime may be required in evenings/weekends and paid out in-lieu time.
    • Longs days are required when on paddling trips in cold, windy, wet conditions.
