BACKGROUND:
Camp Potlatch, owned and operated by Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC, is a wilderness based residential summer camp located in BC’s Howe Sound area for children between the ages of 7 and 16. Camp Potlatch has been in operation for over 70 years with the philosophy of providing quality summer experiences to all children, including those from low-income families. Successful camp staff candidates will require a criminal record check and must provide references. All camp staff live and work on site, which is located 45 minutes away from downtown Vancouver.
OVERVIEW:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination and monitoring of all programs and camp-wide activities. Other duties will include providing support to Cabin Leaders and helping facilitate the creation of an inclusive and fun Potlatch atmosphere. Furthermore, the successful candidate will become a member of the senior staff team responsible for ensuring the overall quality of programming and adherence to safety standards at Camp Potlatch.
Remuneration for this position includes transportation to and from Camp Potlatch, meals, accommodation, and a competitive industry salary for the term. Flexibility in the workweek is required.
JOB DUTIES:
- During the months of May and June, prior to the summer camp season, work as part of a small team of programmers for Camp Potlatch’s Outdoor Centre. Some days during the Spring will be dedicated to preparing for the summer
- Work with the senior staff team to develop and deliver staff training sessions that effectively prepares all staff members to facilitate age appropriate programs in a child centred environment.
- Oversee and coordinate all camp wide activities, mass games, special events, and campfires.
- Create and coordinate all cabin group schedules. Ensure programming is camper focused, age appropriate, and meets provincial and industry standards
- Supervise a team of six Area Heads and encourage the continuous growth and developments of programs that are fun, challenging, and provide opportunities for campers to achieve success
- Ensure all program areas establish an environment that establishes opportunities for campers to succeed, develop a sense of belonging, and build positive relationships.
- Manage an on-going inventory of all program areas. Immediately remove and replace damaged equipment. Carefully keep track of consumable supplies (ex. Arts and crafts) to last the entire camp season
- Work with the senior staff team to maintain an overall camp schedule. Attend and facilitate staff meetings as required. Take on the role of “Staff of the Day” at least once a session.
REQUIREMENTS:
- A minimum 3 years of experience working with children an a provincially accredited summer camp
- Previous experience facilitating a variety of camp programming for youth
- Strong organizational skills
- Standard First Aid with CPR “C”
- NLS & Pleasure Craft Operators License
- Clean Class 5 Drivers License or equivalent Unrestricted Class 4 preferred.
- Clean Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
