Situation
YMCA Camp Elphinstone is located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver. It is situated on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound. During July and August, Camp Elphinstone offers programs for youth ages 5-17, including one and two week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, paddling and hiking multi-day out-trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone operates as an Outdoor Education, Event and Retreat Centre for schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Camp Elphinstone currently serves over 10,000 participants annually.
YMCA Camp Elphinstone has accommodation and dining for up to 472 campers or guests. Camp Elphinstone employs approximately 140 staff/volunteers during July and August, with a team between 20-50 for the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons, and a smaller core team of 10 staff during the winter season. Successful Camp Elphinstone staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to help children and youth develop in an outdoor camp setting, and who believe in 5-star customer service for all client groups.
Nature & Scope
YMCA Camp Elphinstone is seeking individuals to fill the role of Waterfront Supervisor.
The Waterfront Supervisor is responsible for planning and operating a safe, effective and engaging waterfront. The Waterfront Supervisor oversees all waterfront programming including swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, and other waterfront activities
Specific duties include overseeing all aspects of water-based programming, ensuring all waterfront programs meet our high-risk management standards, supervising and supporting the water-based counselling staff, and ensuring that all staff are familiar with the waterfront emergency procedures. The Waterfront Supervisor must ensure that all waterfront activities meet all British Columbia Camping Association (BCCA), Lifesaving, and YMCA standards. The Waterfront Supervisor must have extensive camp, lifeguarding, and ocean waterfront program experience
The Waterfront Supervisor is a member of the Supervisor team. The Supervisor team collaborates closely with the Summer Camp Manager and Assistant Summer Camp Managers to foster a positive camp culture and prioritize the safety and well-being of all campers. Dedicated to delivering a 5-star experience for campers and their families, Section Supervisors play a key role in the development and facilitation of summer staff training. Supervisors participate in scheduling staff, managing program budgets, driving camp vehicles, and facilitating the success of their section of camp.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision to the Waterfront staff. Provide leadership and role modelling to all staff.
- Report all waterfront concerns to the Assistant Camp Managers and Summer Camp Manager
- Assist with developing and delivering innovative training that supports professional development of staff & volunteers. Ensure all staff are familiar with waterfront emergency procedures.
- Ensure all waterfront activities are in accordance with all provincial, lifesaving and YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
- Ensure that all waterfront policies/procedures and Camp Elphinstone’s high risk management standards are met by all participants, staff, volunteers, and guests while at the waterfront.
- Plan Waterfront staff schedules to ensure strong program delivery and necessary time off.
- Assist in purchasing supplies and managing the budget for the waterfront.
- Support with sign-in and sign-out days.
- Assist the Program Supervisor in planning and scheduling programs and events.
- Collaborate with other members of the Supervisor team to support all sections of camp.
- Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff.
- Camp staff are expected to contribute to the success of camp by completing tasks in addition to those listed above. These may include, but are not limited to: cleaning, preparing program materials, and transporting and maintaining equipment.
Qualifications
- Strong leadership skills, and the ability to foster an inclusive and collaborative culture among staff.
- Proven ability to solve problems independently.
- Experience training and mentoring staff.
- Advanced understanding of behavior management, group facilitation, and risk management.
- Experience working in large aquatics environments with many water and boating programs.
- 3 years of experience in aquatics, camping, youth recreation, and/or outdoor education.

- Pleasure Craft Operators Card
- Criminal Reference Check with a Vulnerable Sector Screening issued no later than six (6) months preceding start date
- 3 successful reference checks.
- BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
