    Job Purpose

    As a summer camp, Sasamat Outdoor Centre prides itself on creating an engaging and supportive community where children are made to feel included in the camp culture. The supportive nature of the camp allows for campers to try new activities and develop new skills with the help of caring staff members. Sasamat’s summer camp and Outdoor Centre is located in beautiful British Columbia.

    The Full Time Lifeguard provides the expertise, experience and skills required for the safety of campers participating in all waterfront activities for the Rovers Day Camp Program from Monday to Friday. Lifeguards will lifeguard swimmers and boaters on the water at all times. The waterfront lifeguard will also help with the facilitation of waterfront activities, including set-up, take down, cleaning/disinfecting, and instruction where needed. The waterfront lifeguard is an integral member of the program staff team and when there is no activity on the waterfront, the Waterfront lifeguard will be responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of waterfront, program materials, or assigned to assist elsewhere in camp.  

    The waterfront is the beating heart of any summer camp and one of the most amazing places to spend a summer working with and teaching children. Overnight camp staff stay overnight at camp from Sunday evening until Friday. Overnight camp staff are provided shared traditional style summer camp lodging. Supporting overnight staff of all positions may be asked and required to spend up to a max of two weeks over the summer supporting overnight accommodations of our youngest camper groups. While personal cabin space will be maintained staff may be rotated through an in cabin sleep schedule with the group counsellor to provide maximum safety supervision of the youngest campers.

    Full Time Lifeguard Staff Details and Contract

    Summer Camp 2023 Training 

    • Summer staff training
    • Policy and procedure training
    • RCABC Canoe Course Days course days
    • Rescue boat training (provided by Sasamat)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Staff Training

    • Participate in 100% of pre-season staff training
    • To read, know and practice the information covered in the "Policies & Procedures" section of manual.  (Failure to comply with this information could result in discipline including dismissal.)
    • To read, know and understand the Waterfront Policies of Sasamat Outdoor Centre
    • To fully understand and follow new policies and procedures involving COVID-19 and adhere strictly to the safety of other campers and staff.

    Risk Management

    • Demonstrate knowledge of risk management protocols in keeping with camping industry best practices and provincial regulations
    • Provide constant vigilance when on patrol
    • Conduct a daily inspection of waterfront emergency equipment to ensure all is in place and good order
    • Conduct a daily inspection of waterfront area to ensure it is free of hazards
    • Promote safe COVID distancing and protocols
    • Ensure that all program equipment as specified by the Summer Camp and Outdoor Education Centre Director is cleaned and disinfected per instruction
    • Ensure Sasamat Outdoor Centre waterfront policies are being followed

    Camper Group Leadership

    • Provide behaviour management and general camper care assistance whenever possible
    • To provide group facilitation when needed, assisting program staff
    • Role model appropriate behaviour

    Other Duties

    • The Lifeguard may be asked to assist in duties not listed above. Sasamat Outdoor Centre expects the support of all staff members in fulfilling objectives that may not be specific to this position

    • Sasamat outdoor Centre and Association of Neighborhood Houses of B.C (ANHBC) is committed to protecting the health and safety of its employees and the community. Subject to legal exemptions, proof of COVID-19 vaccination status will be required for this role prior to starting employment.

    Self Care

    • Summer camp is a job like any other, where self-care is extremely important and camp staff are expected to be at work ready for an energy filled day or week of programs, maintain healthy practices, and balance personal/social lives appropriately.



    Specialized Knowledge and Certification

    ·       Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C

    ·       Current NLS (National Lifeguarding Service Pool)

    ·        NLS waterfront preferred*

    ·       Small Boat Operators’ certification

    ·       Current RCA BC Advanced Solo/Tandem Canoe certification

    Additional qualifications considered an asset

    ·       Current WSI (Water Safety Instructor)  

    ·       LSI (Life Saving Instructor) certification

    ·       NLS water park

    ·       NLS (Waterfront)

    ·       Valid Class 4 driver’s license



    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to work independently within prescribed parameters, exercise initiative, and communicate effectively with supervisor
    • Strong organizational ability
    • Ability to work with a wide variety of ages and demographic groups
    • Ability to supervise peers of a close age
    • Ability to observe and assess camper behavior, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
    • Ability to participate actively in a team
    • Enthusiasm, sense of humour, patience, self-control



    • Prior experience in a pool or camp waterfront setting
    • Prior canoeing or kayaking experience


    Working Conditions

    ·       Requires working in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions

    ·       May require working with difficult clients

    ·       May require some weekend work

    ·       May require potential close contact with campers or other staff using appropriate personal protective equipment

    Physical Requirements

    • Physical ability to provide rescue to swimmers and boaters in emergency situations
